ABOUT THE TRAINING
Public Works Technician Training is a 16-week Project-Based Labour Market Training Program
(PBLMT). Participants will receive training and work experience in occupational skills related to public works, working safely, use of tools and equipment, environmental best practices, as well as maintaining and repairing roads and sidewalks, water systems, sanitary and storm sewer systems, building maintenance, parks and recreation facilities, and fire protection systems. Essential skills specifically related to public works will be embedded throughout the training along with life skills.
Training Dates:
Intake 4 - 29th August 2022 - 16th December 2022
Intake 5 - 28th November 2022 - 17th March 2023
Intake 6 - 20th March 2023 - 7th July 2023

TRAINING INFORMATION
Public Works Technician Training is a 100% government-funded free, group-based full-time
program consisting of:
•1 week of orientation (Live Virtual)
•9 weeks of virtual and in-person academic training (Live Virtual)
•1 week of short-term certifications (Hybrid)
•1 week of job support (Live Virtual)
•4 weeks of work experience with local employers (In-Person)
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
(1 of each section must be met in order to be eligible)
Section 1 – Canadian Status + Currently live in BC
•Canadian Citizen
•Permanent Resident
•Refugee with Court Notice of Decision
Section 2 – Employment Status
•Unemployed
•Casual/ on-call Employed (less than 20 hours per week)
• Part-Time Employed (less than 20 hours per week)
Section 3 - EI Eligibility
•BCEA PWD Clients
• BCEA Non-PWD Clients (Income Assistance)
•Active Regular Employment Insurance (EI) Benefits
• EI Reachback: have had Regular EI benefits within the previous 60 months
• Worked full-time for at least any 5 years out of the last 10 years in Canada + have
earned more than $2,000 in insurable earnings and have paid Employee EI premiums
on those earnings in at least 5 of the last 10 years (Note: the 5 years do not have to be
consecutive years)
Section 4 – WorkBC Case Management
• WorkBC Case Manager confirmed your eligibility and submitted your application to the
Ministry. The case Manager sends an approval email to PICS before the start of the
program.
